Origins of Common Words - Nostalgia

About the history, origins, and definitions of the common word nostalgia.

Nostalgia - When Johannes Hofer coined nostalgia in 1668 by combining the Greek words nostos, "return home," and algos, "pain," it meant, in the words of the Oxford English Dictionary, "a form of melancholia caused by prolonged absence from one's home or country." But our rapidly changing society has created a new form of melancholia--past-sickness, as it were--and we extended the meaning of--what else?--an old word to describe it.
