REVERED RELIGIOUS RELICS

CROWN OF THORNS

Two traditions surround this relic of the Crucifixion. One holds that the crown was broken up into many pieces; this would explain the vast number of churches (including Rome's Santa Croce in Gerusalemme Basilica) laying claim to a thorn or two. But the other tradition holds that the crown, in its entirety, was first removed from Jerusalem to Constantinople and finally wound up in the hands of St. Louis IX, a 13th-century king of France. Upon taking possession of the relic, Louis ordered the construction of Sainte Chapelle in Paris to serve as a home for the holy crown.
