Highlights in Office: Mexican-American War, which caused Mexico to cede 500,000 sq. mi. of territory to the U.S.; treaty with Great Britain established Oregon boundary at 49th parallel. Died: June 15, 1849, Nashville, Tenn., from diarrhea.
