World History 1780
About the history of the world in 1780, the first Kentucky Derby won by Sir Charles Bunbury, origin of the name.
TWO CENTURIES OF WORLD HISTORY: 1778-1978
Sir Charles Bunbury's horse Diomed won the first Derby at Epsom Downs in England. The racing classic was named for Edward Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby, who together with Bunbury promoted the event. The story goes that a coin was tossed to see which of them the race would be named after. But for that coin toss, we might have had the "Kentucky Bunbury" at Churchill Downs each spring.
