The British Parliament designated Australia's New South Wales, claimed for England by Captain Cook in 1770 a penal colony, and four years later the first shipment of convicts arrived at Botany Bay. The penal colony was soon moved to Sydney, which became a town of loose and lawless behavior with a shortage of women and other necessities and an oversupply of rum.

Apr.27 The Marriage of Figaro, a daring comedy by Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, was presented at the Theatre Francais after a three-year ban was lifted, ironically, through the efforts of Queen Marie Antoinette and the king's brother, the Count of Artois.
