* A bill to regulate the labor of children in factories became law in Britain. Children below 9 years could not be employed; those between 9 and 13 years of age were limited to 9 hours a day; and for those between 14 and 18 years, 12 hours a day was the maximum. Prior to this, children of 8 or 9 had been allowed to work 12-14 hours a day.
