TWO CENTURIES OF WORLD HISTORY: 1778-1978
* Dissatisfied with the British ban on slavery and other policies, the Boers of South Africa began their Great Trek from the Cape area to non-British country beyond the Orange River and later over the Drakensberg Mountains to the coastal area of Natal.
* Hans Christian Andersen published the first of his 168 fairy tales. Among the most popular stories in the world, they include "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Emperor's New Clothes." Appealing to both children and adults, they have serious moral and philosophical implications.
* American colonists in Texas revolted against Mexico and organized a temporary government. Santa Anna assembled a large army and marched on San Antonio, which had been captured by Americans under Col. Benjamin Milam. The Americans in the city withdrew into the Alamo, the chapel of an old Spanish mission.
