* In Dresden the premiere of Richard Wagner's The Flying Dutchman disappointed those who expected to hear traditional opera. In his first attempt to integrate the music with the dramatic content, Wagner had invented "music drama," a form that would revolutionize opera.

* Anatomically conjoined twins (bound together by a 5-in. ligament at their breastbones), called Siamese after their native country, Chang and Eng Bunker married two normal sisters, Adelaide and Sarah Yates, in North Carolina and would have 21 children.

Dec. Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol, an immediate prodigious success; 6,000 copies sold out the first day. Because of the low price at which it sold, Dickens realized only a small profit on this and subsequent editions. Thackeray remarked of it, "It seems to me a national benefit, and to every man and woman who reads it a personal kindness."
