* A new dance called the fox-trot swept the ballrooms of the U.S. and Europe.

* British suffragettes, under the leadership of Emmeline Goulden Pankhurst, carried out violent demonstrations in London. For breaking windows, burning public buildings, slashing museum paintings, and exploding bombs, they received stiff prison sentences--but no vote.

* Bulgaria lost territory to Serbia, Romania, Greece, and Turkey in the Second Balkan War. The conflict stirred up long-simmering hatreds, which again erupted the following year to begin W.W. I.

* Federal income tax was levied in the U.S. The first tax code: 1% of income above $3,000 for singles; above $4,000 for married couples. A 1% surtax on incomes above $20,000 graduated to 6% on those above $500,000.

Dec. 21 The first crossword puzzle in the U.S., prepared by Arthur Wynne, appeared in the New York World.
