About the history of the world in 1920, the Tommy gun submachine gun invented, Adolf Hitler leads the Nazi party, women receive the right to vote in the U.S.



* Great Britain extended unemployment compensation to all workers, except farmers and domestic servants, earning less than $250 a year.

* The portable automatic weapon known as the submachine gun was invented. It came to be called the tommy gun after its inventer, John Taliaferro Thompson.

Feb. 24 A 31-year-old German soldier named Adolf Hitler addressed 2,000 members of the newly formed National Socialist German Worker's party at the Hofbrauhaus in Munich and announced his 25-point program. A month later Hitler left the army to devote his full attention to the growth of this, the Nazi, party.

Mar. 19 The U.S. Senate voted 49-35 to join the League of Nations with Republican-sponsored reservations. But this fell 7 votes short of the 2/3 vote necessary to ratify the treaty. Defeat of the measure was assured when President Wilson, convalescing from a debilitating stroke, instructed his lieutenants in the Senate to vote down any League bill diluted with Republican amendments.

Aug. 26 American women received the right to vote under the terms of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. Although there was much speculation about the effect of the female franchise on national elections, there has been little discernible change in voting patterns since they voted overwhelmingly, as did men, to put Warren Harding in the White House in their first presidential election.
