Sept. 29 Munich Pact: Representatives from Italy, Germany, France, and Great Britain met to discuss Hitler's claim to the German-populated Sudetenland area of Czechoslovakia. In order to avert war, Britain and France acceded to Hitler's demands. Control of the Sudetenland assured German domination of central Europe.

Oct. 30 Orson Welles's radio dramatization of War of the Worlds-depicting a Martian invasion of the U.S.-convinced hundreds of thousands of Americans that they were being attacked by creatures from outer space.
