Apr. 27 Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, 33, and a small crew set out from Callao, Peru, for the Polynesian Islands in the Kon-Tiki, a sail raft of balsa logs tied together with rope. The purpose of the 4,300-mi. voyage was to prove Heyerdahl's unorthodox theory that ancient South Americans could have, and probably did, sail to the South Seas. After nearly crashing on coral reefs, the Kon-Tiki landed safely near Tahiti in August and radioed Washington to inquire when the next ship was scheduled to call at Papeete, Tahiti. Apparently there was some mix-up in transmission, for the Norwegian ship Thor I made a special trip there to pick up the exhausted crew. Upon arriving in San Francisco, Heyerdahl was shocked to receive a bill for $10,000 for the transoceanic taxi service.

Summer The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in Wadi Qumran near where the Jordan River empties into the Dead Sea.
