Alternate History What if Austria-Hungary Won World War I
About what the defeated Austro-Hungarians would have done if they had won World War I.
WHAT 10 DEFEATED NATIONS PLANNED TO DO HAD THEY WON THE WAR
5. AUSTRIA-HUNGARY (W.W. I, 1914-1918)
During the war, the Austro-Hungarian Empire's major goal was to stay in existence. A polyglot country comprising the modern nations of Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Austria--and parts of Poland, Yugoslavia, Romania, and Italy--Austria-Hungary contemplated annexing the Balkan nations of Serbia, Montenegro, and Albania, as well as additional portions of Italy and Romania if the Central Powers were victorious. Allowing Germany to carve off large sections of Russia would have reduced the threat of Russian influence in the Balkans, which then could be dominated by Austria-Hungary from Greece north to Poland. Instead of becoming one nation, this area was splintered into eight unstable countries by the Treaty of Saint-Germain in 1919.
