10. EGYPT (Israeli War for Independence, 1948)
When the U.N. voted to partition Palestine into separate Arab and Jewish states, Egypt waged war against the Israelis with the intention of destroying the new Jewish country and establishing Arab rule over all of Palestine. Faruk I, the king of Egypt, was determined to dominate Arab Palestine by installing his puppet Mohammed Said Haj Amin el Husseini, the mufti of Jerusalem, as king of the new nation. It is not known what Faruk had in store for the Jews living in Palestine, but his protege Mohammed Said Haj Amin el Husseini called for "extermination and momentous massacre." Faruk also anticipated seizing the Suez Canal from Britain after defeating the Israelis.
