1001--Viking Leif Ericson

Son of hot-tempered Eric the Red, who discovered and colonized Greenland, Leif Ericson was a "temperate, fair-dealing" young man in his 20s when he set sail with a crew of 35 in his knarr, a beamy, knockabout cousin of the Viking dragonship. Ericson and his crew made it to Vinland, now identified by archaeologists as Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland.
