10 ANIMAL SPECIES IN WHICH THE MALE CARES FOR THE YOUNG

7. MOUTH-BREEDING BETTAS

These small fishes are natives of India. When the female spawns, the male deftly catches the eggs in his anal fin and fertilizes them. The female then gathers the eggs in her mouth and spits them, one by one, at the male, who collects them in his mouth. Occasionally he will return an egg to his mate, and the "ball game" between the two might continue for several throws. The female is adamant about the male's duties, however, and eventually all of the eggs are stuffed into his mouth, where they will incubate for the next four to five days. During this time the male cannot eat. Even after the eggs hatch, the fry will seek refuge in their parents' mouths when they feel threatened.
