No More Report Cards

I am 17 years old and a senior in high school and I propose that tests and report cards be eliminated. I know. You've heard it before. But I think I've got some new reasons. First of all, let me make it clear that I have benefited from the tests-and-report-cards game. I learned early (from my older brother) that the purpose of school is not to acquire knowledge, but to get good grades. And you can get good grades by using certain tricks--special ways to take tests and to play up to the teachers. I have a very high grade average and I get to go to the college of my choice. Teachers love me. They look right at me when they lecture and they give me A's. I feel sorry for some of the other students: the slow learners, the poor test-takers, the intimidated. As soon as they get an F or a D or even a C on a test, most teachers forget about them, preferring to concentrate on those of us who will "go far."

How stupid! The other students deserve just as much attention as I do, maybe more. But the teachers are too busy giving tests, weeding us out, creating hierarchies so that employers will know whom to hire. Which brings me to my point: schools exist not to provide education, but to pre-sort prospective employees for the business "community." You out there! You taxpayers! You are giving corporations a free ride by providing services that they should be paying for. Let the corporations do the testing and training. If there were no tests and no report cards, school would be more relaxed, more people would receive a good education, and our society would be better for it.

I would also like to add that I, personally, have spent over 1,000 hours taking tests and I haven't even graduated from high school yet. Instead of classes and schools having "exit" exams, universities and businesses should have "entrance" exams. Have I made myself clear? Have I learned to communicate my thoughts? It doesn't really matter because I've gotten straight A's in my English classes.
