The Development of the Sex Manual

CREATIVE AND SEXUAL SCIENCE: OR MANHOOD, WOMANHOOD, AND THEIR MUTUAL INTERRELATIONS . . . AS TAUGHT BY PHRENOLOGY AND PHYSIOLOGY (1870)

Advice:

1. Be the perfect lady or gentleman. Wives should treat husbands as the fathers of their children; husbands should treat wives as the mothers of their children. Share things and ideas. Cherish each other.

2. Sleep in the same room.

3. Since a "woman lives on love," men should be affectionate.

4. When "uniting in the parental capacity" (the "Holy of Holies"), do it in a pleasant place, when feeling vigorous. The husband should fondle the woman to awaken love in her and be careful not to demand too much. The woman should participate in the "uniting" with reciprocal passion. As Fowler comments, "Not a blush of shame tinges her modest cheek as she interchanges expressions of conjugal affection with the father of her dear babe."

5. Though the man has "rights," he should not force himself on the woman. The time for mating should be chosen by the woman rather than the man.

6. When having intercourse, the couple should try to provoke in each other the qualities wanted in the offspring, for all parental "states" are "stamped" on progeny at this time.

7. If one wants lots of children, one should avoid excessive passion. Girls are conceived within two to three days after menses. (Wrong on both counts. Actually women tend to be in a "safe" period immediately following the menstrual period.)

8. Masturbation is a "secret sin" and "nauseating slime," as sinful as fornication. Those who do it look "mawkish, shamed." (They also have pimples and sunken eyes.) To stop, "Make one desperate struggle. Summon every energy! STOP SHORT!" (Wrong again, as is Fowler's belief, common then, that masturbation could lead to insanity.)

9. Sexuo-maternal and-paternal love is recommended; that is, mothers and sons as well as fathers and daughters should be "lovers" (not in the full sense, of course). Nature prevents the perversion of this love. Regarding a little girl's love for her father, Fowler says, "Burning kisses mount her warm lips, he takes her into his arms. Convulsively she clasps his willing neck. Kiss follows kiss in quick succession, loud, hearty, and free. Impurity there? Then are angels impure?" (Fowler goes overboard on this; incest is not that rare an occurrence.)
