3. AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN (1868)
Perhaps America's first and greatest success story, Franklin's chronicles of his struggles to overcome serious defects in his personality make fascinating reading for anyone wishing to change his or her life for the better. Franklin was not blind to his own bad habits, traits that he realized were impeding his development and progress. He finally developed a plan to rid himself of them: "I made a little book, in which I allotted a page for each of 13 virtues. I ruled each page with red ink, so as to have seven columns, one for each day of the week, marking each column with a letter for the day. I crossed these columns with 13 red lines, marking the beginning of each line with the first letter of one of the virtues, on which line, and in its proper column, I might mark, by a little black spot, every fault I found upon examination to have been committed respecting that virtue upon that day." Franklin's system still works. Available in countless editions.
