Motions of the Earth Precession of the Earth's Axis
About the different motions of the earth that are going on around us astronomically and geologically including the precession of the earth's axis.
MOTIONS OF THE EARTH
3. PRECESSION OF THE EARTH'S AXIS
Because it bulges slightly at the equator, the earth moves like a spinning top as it responds to the gravitational pulls of the sun and the moon. This spinning motion, called precession, causes the North Pole to trace a circular path which takes 26,000 years to complete. As the North Pole moves along this path, the earth's orientation to the stars constantly changes, so that by 14,000 A.D. the star Vega will have replaced Polaris as the North Star.
