TAX BURDEN CARRIED BY PEOPLE IN 22 COUNTRIES

An exhaustive survey of tax revenues in various countries by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) showed that the total tax burden for individuals in the U.S.--including national, state, and local levies--is smaller than that in most other developed countries. The following figures are measured in cents per dollar of Gross Domestic Product. Sixteen of the 22 developed countries exact a bigger tax bite than the U.S. does, but only in the United Kingdom has the tax rate gone down.
