HISTORY AROUND THE CLOCK

10:00 in the Morning

May 19, 1780. The "dark day" of New England. It began like most other mornings, but at 10:00 A.M. a mysterious darkness spread over the land. Although there were no clouds, candles had to be lit inside houses, and outdoor work had to be stopped because people could not see what they were doing. At midday it was impossible to read a book. The darkness continued until the dawn of the following day. The strange phenomenon has never been scientifically explained. However, it is known that there was no eclipse of the sun on that day.
