6:57 in the Evening

May 26, 1940. Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of trapped Allied forces from the beach of Dunkerque, began. This W.W. II plan became the greatest evacuation in military history and one of the most complex and hazardous sea manuevers ever attempted. It was organized by Admiral Bertram Ramsay with a staff of only 16 from his operational headquarters cut deep into the White Cliffs of Dover. Here the most most unusual fleet in naval history was assembled. Any boat that could possible make the Channel crossing was requisitioned for the operation. They included coasters, colliers, paddle steamers, tugs, Thomas fire floats, lifeboats, pleasure steamers, barges, fishing vessels, yachts, and cabin cruisers. The boats were manned by the most diverse crew imaginable--doctors, dentists, truck drivers, civil servants, bankers, bakers, and retired businessmen.

Against all odds and with very little chance of survival, the Dunkerque armada sailed for France. Despite ferocious German air attacks and unrelenting bombardment from land for the next nine days, this fleet of 848 craft evacuated 338,226 men. Back and forth in the face of heavy artillery fire, the little boats continually ferried men from the beach to the big ships in deep water. Sixty-five big ships, including nine destroyers, were sunk, most of them by direct German air attack. The little fleet lost 240 vessels. The spirit of Dunkerque inspired Winston Churchill on June 4 to make one of his most dramatic speeches: "We shall not flag nor fail. We shall go on to the end ...We shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air; we shall defend our island whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender."
