World Country American Samoa

About the world country American Samoa, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

Location: Seven easternmost islands of the Samoan island chain, in the southwest Pacific, east of Fiji. Size: 76 sq. mi. (197 sq. km.). Population: 34,000.

Who Really Rules: American Samoa is a self-governing U.S. territory, headed since January, 1978, by an elective governor. Nearly half the work force is employed by the government, which gets four fifths of its budget from the U.S. federal government. The major private businesses are fish-canning plants owned by Van Camp and Starkist.

Half the residents of American Samoa are immigrants, while as many as 60,000 Samoans, who are American nationals without the right to vote in federal elections, are in Hawaii, California, and the U.S. armed forces.
