World Country Australia

About the world country Australia, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

NATIONS OF THE WORLD

AUSTRALIA

Location: Continent and islands dividing the Pacific and Indian oceans, south of the East Indies. Size: 2,967,895 sq. mi. (7,686,848 sq. km.). Population: 14,796,000.

Who Really Rules: Australia's parliamentary government is currently controlled by a conservative Liberal-Country party coalition, but the leftist Labor party has a large following, as does the powerful Australian Council of Trade Unions. Australia is a capitalist country with extensive social welfare programs. Much of the industrial economy, including the rapidly expanding mineral sector, is controlled by foreign corporations.

Though the aboriginal population has land rights similar to those held by American Indians, the rights to minerals underneath their lands are controlled by the government. The government has awarded numerous uranium-mining concessions to foreign companies over the objections of the aborigines.
