BANGLADESH

Location: At the northern tip of the Bay of Bengal (Indian Ocean), between India and Burma. Size: 55,598 sq. mi. (143,998 sq. km.). Population: 94,170,000 (83% Muslim, 16% Hindu).

Who Really Rules: Lt. Gen. Ziaur Rahman seized power in 1975, and gradually returned the country to civilian rule. He was elected president in 1978, and in 1979 his Bangladesh Nationalist party won the relatively free, contested, parliamentary elections. Rahman was gunned down by troops in June, 1981, and 75-year-old moderate Abdus Sattar became acting president.

Since 1972 most of Bangladesh's finance and industry have been state-owned, but Rahman encouraged the rebirth of the private sector, including selected foreign investment.
