Who Really Rules: Botswana is a multiparty parliamentary democracy in which only one party, the Botswana Democratic party, has a substantial following. In 1979 the BDP, which is based on Tswana tribal ties, won 29 out of the 32 contested seats in the Legislative Assembly. Sir Seretse Khama, who served as president from the country's independence in 1966 until his death in 1980, had been an important Tswana chief.

Botswana's economy is subordinate to South Africa. More than 40,000 nationals work in South Africa's mines. De Beers, the South African diamond giant, controls Botswana's significant diamond exports, while other foreign companies control other minerals. Cattle, raised by traditional farmers who make up most of the population, are exported to Europe.
