NATIONS OF THE WORLD

BRUNEI

Location: Two enclaves on the north coast of the East Indies island of Borneo (Kalimantan). Size: 2,226 sq. mi. (5,765 sq. km.). Population: 218,000.

Who Really Rules: This oil-rich British protectorate is governed by Sultan Sir Muda Hassanal Bolkiah and his father, former Sultan Sir Omar Ali Saifuddin. The sultan's government is operated largely by British civil servants, and the oil and gas fields are run by Royal Dutch Shell. A battalion of British-controlled Nepalese Gurkhas provides for defense. The sultan still detains, without trial, eight members of the banned Partai Rakyat Brunei (People's party), which staged a rebellion in 1962 when the elder sultan refused to let the elected members of the Brunei Legislative Council form a government. British troops suppressed the uprising and arrested 2,500 people.
