Location: Landlocked in central Africa, north of the Congo and Zaire. Size: 240,534 sq. mi. (622,984 sq. km.). Population: 2,565,000.

Who Really Rules: In September, 1979, several hundred French troops overthrew Emperor Jean Bedel Bokassa, a close friend of France whose atrocities had become embarrassing to the French government. The French installed as president David Dacko, who had been deposed by Bokassa in 1966. Though Dacko has promised elections, he has detained a major opposition leader, Ange Patasse, and banned strikes.
