World Country Costa Rica
About the world country Costa Rica, its location, size, population, and who is in power.
NATIONS OF THE WORLD
Location: In Central America, between Nicaragua and Panama.
Size: 19,575 sq. mi. (50,700 sq. km.). Population: 2,295,000.
Who Really Rules: Costa Rica has a tradition of multiparty democracy, in which transfers of power are usually smooth. It has no standing army--just a poorly armed civil guard. The judiciary, legislature, and presidency are independent. In fact, when the minister of public security authorized the landing of a 35-man U.S. Air Force rescue team near the Nicaraguan border in 1979, he was forced to withdraw permission when the legislature voted to deny it. In 1980 the U.S. Army was forced to dismantle an observation post it had set up near the Nicaraguan border.
All sectors of Costa Rican society supported the Sandinista revolution in neighboring Nicaragua, but the government limited the movement of Sandinista guerrillas in Costa Rica until Venezuela signed a pact with Costa Rica in effect promising to defend it against retaliatory invasion.
