World Country Cuba

About the world country Cuba, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

Location: An island in the northern Caribbean, about 90 mi. south of Florida. Size: 44,218 sq. mi. (114,524 sq. km.). Population: 9,985,000.

Who Really Rules: Cuba is run by the Cuban Communist party, headed by charismatic President Fidel Castro, the guerrilla leader who overthrew the Batista dictatorship in 1959. The Communist bureaucracy runs the government and the centralized economy. Opponents are encouraged to emigrate, and the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, an ever-present militia incorporating most of the adult population, maintain a careful watch for subversion and intervention.

Cuba is a close ally of the U.S.S.R., and it is host to the only Soviet troops in the Western Hemisphere. It receives substantial economic and technical assistance from the Soviet Union.
