NATIONS OF THE WORLD

CYPRUS

Location: An island south of Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean. Size: 3,572 sq. mi. (9,251 sq. km.). Population: 623,000 (78% Greek, 18% Turkish).

Who Really Rules: Since 1974 the island has been divided into two sectors. Troops from Turkey occupy the northern zone, about 36% of the area. Presently the home of the Turkish Cypriot minority as well as colonists from Turkey, the Turkish sector contains tourist facilities, citrus orchards, and about 70% of the island's overall productive capacity. When the Turks invaded, 180,000 Greek Cypriots fled the northern sector. The government of Cyprus occupies the southern 64% of the island. A majority of the Greek Cypriots reside there. Most of the 45,000 Turkish Cypriots from the southern sector have fled to the north. The southern economy is growing rapidly, but it is incurring a mounting foreign debt.

Representatives of elective governments in both sectors have been negotiating to reunite the country, but segments of both populations support annexation of the zones to Greece and Turkey.
