GERMANY, EAST (GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC)

Location: The eastern third of present-day Germany, west of Poland on the Baltic Sea in central Europe. Size: 41,768 sq. mi. (108,178 sq. km.).

Population: 16,756,000.

Who Really Rules: East Germany is a one-party state, ruled by the Social Unity (Communist) party, an elite meritocracy. The government strictly limits emigration and free speech, but it no longer jams Western broadcasts. Many East Germans now watch West German television.

East Germany has a state-owned, centrally planned economy, with a comprehensive social welfare system. The standard of living is the highest in the Communist world.

Since W.W. II East Germany has been occupied by Soviet troops.
