World Country East Timor

About the world country East Timor, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

Location: Eastern half of the East Indies island of Timor, just north of Australia, plus adjacent smaller islands. Size: 5,763 sq. mi. (14,925 sq. km.). Population: 400,000 to 600,000 (indefinite because of massive war casualties).

Who Really Rules: Indonesia, which invaded the former Portuguese colony in December, 1975, formally annexed East Timor as a province in 1976. However, the annexation has never been recognized by Portugal, the U.N., or the Timorese. Earlier in 1975, leaders of the Revolutionary Front for the Independence of East Timor (FRETILIN) had declared independence, and when forces of their more populous neighbor attacked, they retreated to fight a protracted guerrilla war. From the start, Indonesia has controlled the flow of news from Timor, but refugees report ongoing fighting.
