World Country Equatorial Guinea

About the world country Equitorial Guinea, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

Location: On the west coast of Africa, between Gabon and Cameroon, plus islands in the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic Ocean). Size: 10,831 sq. mi. (28,051 sq. km.). Population: 245,000 (there are also 100,000 to 120,000 exiles living in neighboring countries).

Who Really Rules: In August, 1979, Defense Minister Theodore Nguema Mbasogo overthrew and executed his uncle, president-for-life Masie Nguema Biyogo, one of Africa's most brutal despots. The new military government has not yet scheduled any elections or other democratization programs. Officials in Spain, Equatorial Guinea's former colonial master, knew of plans for the coup beforehand, and they have supported the new regime. In addition, troops from Morocco help keep order.
