World Country Grenada

About the world country Grenada, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

Location: One major island and several smaller islands (the Grenadines) at the southern end of the Lesser Antilles, in the eastern Caribbean. Size: 133 sq. mi. (344 sq. km.). Population: 111,000.

Who Really Rules: Grenada is run by the New JEWEL (Joint Endeavor for Welfare, Education, and Liberation) Movement, headed by Prime Minister Maurice Bishop. Bishop's People's Revolutionary Army seized power from unpopular Prime Minister Eric Gairy in a March, 1979, coup. Since then it has arrested opponents and banned the island's only independent newspaper. The government is socialist, dedicated to improving conditions for the island's poor population, but it has nationalized only one enterprise, a bottling plant, following a labor dispute.

Cuba is supporting the Grenada revolution with guns, technicians, and an airport construction crew, but the New JEWEL Movement has chosen to affiliate with the Socialist International, which includes parties such as the German and Scandinavian Social Democrats as well as the British and Israeli Labour parties.
