World Country Guinea-Bissau

About the world country Guinea-Bissau, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

Location: On the west African coast, between Guinea and Senegal, plus adjacent islands. Size: 13,948 sq. mi. (36,125 sq. km.). Population: 665,000.

Who Really Rules: Guinea-Bissau is a one-party state, governed by the left-wing PAIGG (Partido Africano da Independencia da Guinee e Cabo Verde) since independence in 1974. During the war for independence, the population in liberated zones was organized into local "political committees." That structure remains today; there are about 1,000 such committees throughout the country.

In November, 1980, a military coup led by Maj. Joao Bernardo Vieira overthrew the government of revolutionary leader Luis Cabral, who was charged with subordinating the Guinean people to an elite from the Cape Verde Islands, as well as emphasizing industrial development rather than agricultural modernization.
