World Country Kenya
About the world country Kenya, its location, size, population, and who is in power.
NATIONS OF THE WORLD
Location: On the east coast of equatorial Africa, between Somalia and Tanzania. Size: 224,960 sq. mi. (582,646 sq. km.). Population: 16,808,000.
Who Really Rules: Kenya's elected government is dominated by leaders of the Kikuyu ethnic group through the Kenya African National Union (KANU) party. Though the KANU leadership selects all National Assembly candidates from those who spend $150 or more to buy "lifetime party memberships," opponents of the Kikuyu leadership have won office. For instance, when in 1979 KANU refused to let Ogiga Odinga, a Luo ethnic group leader and former vice-president, stand for election, his son-in-law and other Luo candidates defeated KANU's national chairman and three other members of the government.
The Kenyan economy is dominated by foreign capital, including British and American-based multinational corporations, and Kenyan citizens of British and American descent. However, the government-backed African commercial class is growing in importance.
