World Country Madagascar

About the world country Madagascar, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

Location: Large island across Mozambique Channel from southeast Africa. Size: 226,656 sq. mi. (587,041 sq. km.). Population: 8,872,000.

Who Really Rules: The Socialist military regime of Commander Didier Ratsiraka, which took power in 1975, permits opposition from several parties that supported the 1975 revolution. The government controls finance, a large share of foreign trade, and 30% of industry. However, some 85% of the population is engaged in subsistence agriculture.

Although France remains Madagascar's largest trading partner, the Ratsiraka regime closed France's naval base at Diego-Suarez and has accused French interests of attempting to destabilize the Madagascar government.
