World Country Malawi

About the world country Malawi, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

Location: Southeast Africa, along the west coast of Lake Malawi (Nyasa). Size: 45,747 sq. mi. (118,484 sq. km.). Population: 6,134,000.

Who Really Rules: Malawi is ruled by Dr. H. Kamuzu Banda, president for life, and his conservative Malawi Congress party. Banda represses active opposition and controls the flow of information in and out of the country. In the 1978 elections, however, more than a third of the sitting members of the National Assembly were defeated by other Congress party candidates.

Foreign companies, chiefly from Britain, run Malawi's tea and tobacco plantations, while South Africans control the tourist industry along Lake Malawi. As many as 200,000 Malawi men work in South Africa.
