World Country Maldives
About the world country Maldives, its location, size, population, and who is in power.
NATIONS OF THE WORLD
Location: 1,192 small islands in the Indian Ocean, southwest of India, Size: 115 sq. mi. (298 sq. km.). Population: 161,000 (on 22 islands).
Who Really Rules: There are no political parties on the Maldives, but the country is ruled by an elected parliament--the Majlis--which selects the republic's president. Since the Maldives are strategically situated in the mid-Indian Ocean, the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. have carefully watched events there ever since 1976, when the British closed their base at Gan, the southernmost island. The island republic has upgraded its relations with the Soviet Union since then, but it has not accepted a Soviet offer to lease Gan for a reported $1 million a year. Thus far, the Republic of Maldives is committed to demilitarizing the Indian Ocean.
