World Country Mali

About the world country Mali, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

Location: Landlocked in West Africa, from the Sahara Desert to the upper Niger River basin. Size: 478,764 sq. mi. (1,240,000 sq. km.).

Population: 6,912,000.

Who Really Rules: President Moussa Traore, head of the single legal party, the Democratic Union of Malian People, has held power since he led a 1968 military coup. Though he returned the country to constitutional government in 1979, the military still reigns supreme, despite its small size (4,500 men). The regime is unpopular among the impoverished population, and there has been active opposition among students, labor, and former members of the Union Soudanaise, the party in power before 1968.

A former French colony, Mali receives assistance from France, the U.S., the Soviet Union, and China, as well as international financial institutions.
