World Country Nauru

About the world country Nauru, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

Location: An island in the Micronesian West Pacific, just south of the equator, west of Kiribati (Gilbert Islands). Size: 8 sq. mi. (21 sq. km.).

Population: 8,000 (58% Nauruan).

Who Really Rules: The elected parliament, the indirectly elected president, and the Nauru Phosphate Commission are responsible for the distribution and investment of Nauru's phosphate revenues. Though phosphate exports make Nauru one of the world's richest countries, per capita, the government expects the phosphate deposits to be exhausted by 1993. The government is sinking about half its budget into the unprofitable Air Nauru. Several hundred million dollars, however, are invested in an Australian-managed trust fund, to revert to government control when the phosphate runs out.
