World Country North Yemen Arab Republic

About the world country North Yemen Arab Republic, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

Location: Southwestern Arabian Peninsula, fronting the Red Sea, in the Middle East. Size: 75,290 sq. mi. (195,000 sq. km.). Population: 5,371,000.

Who Really Rules: North Yemen (with its capital at San'a) is ruled by a military regime headed by Col. Ali Abdullah Saleh. Its urban economy is capitalist, and thousands of merchants from Aden (South Yemen) have set up business there. Shiite Muslims form the majority of the population. Sections of the country are essentially under tribal rule. Several hundred thousand Yemenis work abroad, primarily in Saudi Arabia. In 1979 they sent home a whopping $1.4 billion in earnings.

Because Yemen is strategically located at the southern entrance to the Red Sea and borders Saudi Arabia, the U.S., U.S.S.R., and Saudi Arabia have all provided financial and/or military assistance to win its friendship. Relations with South Yemen have varied from negotiations aimed at unification to outright border war.
