Location: Windward Islands of the eastern Caribbean, between St. Vincent and Martinique. Size: 238 sq. mi. (616 sq. km.). Population: 126,000.

Who Really Rules: In 1979 St. Lucia was granted independence from Great Britian. The St. Lucia Labour Party won parliamentary elections that year, ending 15 years of leadership by the United Workers' Party (UWP). The UWP has formed an alliance with a new Progressive Labour Party and promises to keep Prime Minister Winston Cenac's government in turmoil until the next elections are held in 1984. St. Lucia has a mixed economy open to foreign investment.
