World Country The Gambia

About the world country The Gambia, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

Location: Along the Gambia River on the west coast of Africa, surrounded by Senegal. Size: 4,361 sq. mi. (11,295 sq. km.). Population: 627,000.

Who Really Rules: The Gambia's multiparty democracy is led by President Sir Alhaji Dawda Kairaba Jawara and his People's Progressive party. Ethnic ties influence politics, so Jawara balances his cabinet appointments among the various tribes. Peanuts are the major export, but tourism also generates significant foreign income as thousands of northern Europeans come to Gambia each year to enjoy its climate and political stability. Since Gambia has no differences with neighboring Senegal, it maintains no armed forces, just an internal police force.
