World Country Togo

About the world country Togo, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

Location: On the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic Ocean) in west Africa, between Ghana and Benin. Size: 21,622 sq. mi. (56,000 sq. km.). Population: 2,710,000.

Who Really Rules: Togo is ruled by Gen. Gnassingbe Eyadema, who first seized power in 1963 in independent Africa's first military coup. One-party elections in December, 1979, merely confirmed his position. From a northern ethnic group, Eyadema has downgraded the role of the traditional Togo elite, made up of southerners from the Mina ethnic group intermarried with descendants of ex-slaves from Brazil. Eyadema represses the elite, particularly those connected with the previous government, just as the southerners repressed opposition when they were in power.

Togo's major exports are phosphates. France, its former colonial ruler, is its leading trading partner.
