World Country Tonga

About the world country Tonga, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

Location: About 170 islands in the southwestern Pacific, east of Fiji.

Size: 270 sq. mi. (699 sq. km.). Population: 92,500.

Who Really Rules: Tonga is a feudal society, ruled by King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, his brother Prince Fatafehi Tu'ipelehake (the premier), and 33 hereditary nobles. Only 7 of the 22 members of the Legislative Assembly are elected by the public. Though the king owns all land on the islands, it is allotted to the nobles, who in turn assign 8 1/4-acre sections to adult male citizens (one parcel each, as available).
