World Country Turkey

About the world country Turkey, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

NATIONS OF THE WORLD

TURKEY

Location: Asia Minor--the portion of Asia between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea--and the southeastern Europe peninsula of Thrace. Size: 301,381 sq. mi. (780,576 sq. km.). Population: 47,284,000 (85% Turkish, 12% Kurdish).

Who Really Rules: In September, 1980, the Turkish military seized power, ostensibly to halt political violence from both the Right and Left. However, the coup also stifled popular opposition to an economic austerity program imposed in conjunction with the International Monetary Fund. Those economic policies continue under the military regime.

Earlier in 1980, the U.S. and Turkey signed a military cooperation agreement in which Turkey allowed the U.S. to reopen several intelligence bases in return for military aid. A member of NATO, Turkey had been in U.S. disfavor because of its conflicts with Greece, another NATO member, and its occupation of northern Cyprus.
