Location: Southeasternmost islands in the Bahamas, northeast of Cuba. Size: 166 sq. mi. (430 sq. km.). Population: 8,000.
Who Really Rules: The Turks and Caicos are British territories dependent upon British funds. Instead of demanding independence, in the early 1970s the elected State Council petitioned unsuccessfully to be joined to Canada. The U.S. operates a navy navigation facility, an oceanographic research center, and a missile test support system from the islands.
